The seasons are changing here at Quark Castle. It’s getting dark earlier and there’s a chill in the air.
Today I bundled up and raked leaves off of the castle’s walkways. It was invigorating work. The sun shining down through the tree branches made for a beautiful afternoon!
As much as I appreciate the fall weather, in the brisk mornings it can be tough to motivate and roll out of my comfortable bed.
Honestly, it helps to have an incentive, like something irresistible waiting for me at the breakfast table.
With this in mind, I’m in the castle kitchen getting ready to whip up a breakfast treat that will tempt me out of bed in the unforgiving morning hours.
I’ve chosen to bake some Royal German Nut Rolls with Quark, which are super simple to make and utterly delicious.
These rolls are a hit with everyone in the castle.
They’re more than just enticing; they’re made with healthy ingredients so they’re nutritious, too.
I use whole wheat flour plus low-calorie, high-protein Quark. With every roll you get a boost of energy to propel you through your morning routine!
Certainly, it’s the Quark that provides the considerable nutritional value and the satisfying, not-at-all sugary taste.
There’s always the option of making your own Quark to use in this recipe. If you plan accordingly, you can have fresh Quark at the ready to create an extra special batch of rolls.
That said, if you don’t have the time or interest to make your own, plain store-bought Quark would do!
I’ve said this before, but these really are a breeze to make, with only a handful of ingredients and a few simple steps.
Here’s a tip: lightly flour your hands before forming the dough into balls. You’ll have an easier time shaping the mixture and an easier time cleaning up the sticky leftover pieces.
Since I’m pretty busy with royal engagements, I like to plan ahead.
Sometimes I make a double batch of nut rolls and freeze some for later. I just take them out the night before and by morning they are ready for me to enjoy!
I like to heat up my roll and have it with a steaming cup of coffee. Although the rolls are quite filling on their own, when I have guests at the castle I serve them as part of my Rise and Shine Royal Breakfast Buffet.
The hearty whole wheat flour blends so well with the subtle Quark flavor.
You can add walnuts or hazelnuts (or both!), which have so many health benefits.
Walnuts promote a healthy gut, help with weight control and support good brain function.
Hazelnuts contain fiber, folate and vitamin E, among many other positive qualities.
Whichever you choose, I find that they add just enough sweetness to satisfy even a queen.
