As a queen, I have the luxury of traveling the world and tasting different foods, and by far one of my favorites is healthy tzatziki.
This dip is typical in Greece and Cyprus, and the right recipe will transport your taste buds straight to the Mediterranean.
I’m enjoying this healthy tzatziki dip as part of a refreshing brunch following a brisk walk. After exercise, it’s best to eat a lighter meal instead of a heavy one—and a cool one at that.
I often bring my veggie tray outside to my garden and I snack on broccoli, baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, and celery sticks with my tzatziki.
In addition to being an outstanding dip, this is the perfect side for potatoes, meat, or poultry.
The best tzatziki recipe
My version of this popular sauce is made with the superfood Quark. The result? It’s instantly healthier.
That’s because Quark is low in calories, fat, and sodium. In fact, it has a fraction of the calories you find in most other cheeses. And Quark also contains vitamins B6, B2 and B12, as well as calcium.
This healthy tzatziki sauce is chock-full of other goodies straight from the vegetable garden, like cucumber, which has tons of benefits, including antioxidant flavonoids, vitamin C, folic acid, beta carotene, and fiber.
The mint and lemon juice give it that extra bright flavor, reminiscent of festive days by a lake or swimming pool.
Lemon juice alone has a myriad of health benefits, as it contains vitamin C, aids in digestion and even weight loss, is known to lower blood pressure, and helps prevent kidney stones.
And don’t forget the olive oil! There is plenty of evidence that “liquid gold” helps reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and inflammation.
Tzatziki sauce is thought to have originated during the Ottoman Empire and is a well-loved recipe in Greece, but has slight variations depending on which corner of the world you visit.
I love using Quark in this dip instead of Greek yogurt, as it makes it instantly healthier.
If you’re having guests over or want to take a special dip to a summer party, this is a great option. It’s easy to make, it’s delicious, and it only takes a few minutes to prepare.
